Visiting Costa Rica can be a thrilling adventure filled with stunning landscapes, and tons of wildlife to look for, above & under, water. However, the tropical climate may surprise you with unexpected rain showers, especially during the rainy season (in our area it is May - October). But don’t let that you forgo your Costa Rica vacation! Whether you need activities because of rain, or too much sun has left you a little crisp, here are some options of what to do with your kids in Costa Rica while vacationing in the Potrero / Flamingo / Playa Grande / Tamarindo areas to help you feel like you’re not missing out on anything.

Costa Rica is known for many things, at the top of the list – chocolate! Luckily there are two indoor experience near-by to cure your sweet-tooth and offer some learning while experiencing something truly Costa Rican. Reina’s Chocolates is closer to Tamarindo area has tasting for beginners, and classes for those that take their chocolate serious! The Beach Chocolate Factory in the Brasilito/Conchal area and offers tasting, educational experiences, and will even come to you! If you do go to them, just across the courtyard is the PurrVida Lounge Cat Café for your animal lovers. Pop in for some other treats and soft cuddles.
For the more adventurous kids, Tama Rocks Climbing and Fitness Center offers day passes and package pricing so you can find what fits best with your vacation time, or just a rainy day. If horseback riding was on your list but you’re not too sure about doing it on the beach, contact Flamingo Equestrian Club for covered riding/lessons, tacking, or caring for their horses.

Let’s Play Kids Café is located in Roco Mystica between Villa Real and Tamarindo. Plenty of parking, spacious grounds and offers indoor and outdoor fun. There’s a big pool, tennis/pickleball/basketball court, and a covered café with a delicious menu, complete with beverages for all ages. Check their site for monthly events and special offers.
In Playa Grande, check out La Rampa Surf & Sk8park. Beach culture everywhere isn't complete with out skateboarding and this little enclave can help you with both. From lessons on land and water, to competitions for both, get your little rippers and groms here.
Guanacaste Children’s Center offers camp experiences for drop ins, weekly or monthly options. Programs like team sports, and outdoor exploring, and more are available. Check their website for age availability, times, and prices.
Maybe you have got a Picasso amongst your group? Or maybe someone will unlock a hidden talent? Here are some great options for art/culinary classes – some even come to you!

If you’re looking for something for adults and kids, Chop House Tamarindo not only offers some good pub-like food, they also have games, a small playground, foosball table, and Kids Day with characters & activities! Try to catch them on a day when their signature show ‘Weird Cinderella’ is happening.
Potrero Brewery is a great space for you to catch up on the scores, and for your kids to meet new friends. Always a family atmosphere with great food attached, and a bunch of board games for all ages. Check their schedule for art classes, mosaic making, swap meets, and even markets geared towards kids.
When walking around town, look for community boards.
They are scattered throughout each town and can be found in stores, on sidewalks, parking lots, or event posters taped to store fronts. Also check out U.pe online. It’s a crowd sourced webpage that is full of events, classes, important phone numbers and, in general, a wonderful resource for our community.
So while rain in Costa Rica may seem like an obstacle, it actually opens up a realm of exciting and authentic activities for you and your kids, there’s no shortage of engaging things to do when the clouds roll in. Embrace the experience and create lasting memories with your kids—rain or shine!
